We are all very much looking forward to working with you. We plan for our dynamic programs to cover both new and familiar territory with your dancing experience – taking your training to a new level of understanding, interpretation, strength and artistic expression as well as having a lot of fun!

To reserve your spot in residence a deposit is required and beds will be filled on a first come first serve basis.

Chaperones

Jörgen Dance Academy Chaperones will be with the residents at all times. They will have a room in the same suite as the residents. The chaperones will travel to and from George Brown College with the residents on a daily basis. Most evenings, chaperones will be available to escort residents on trips and/or to stay back at the residence. On weekends the chaperones will take residents for excursions. Residents will be provided with choices for their weekend excursions and will, as a group, decide on their weekend plans. Chaperones will have all the emergency contact information for each resident and in cases where students have cell phones the chaperone can exchange phone numbers with the students. Should you have any special directions for your child’s involvement in extra-curricular activities, please let us know by email. Meals and bedtimes will be monitored to ensure that residents are equipped to get the most out of their time in the program. The chaperones are there to care for the residents and assist them in any means necessary; to make sure the students’ stay at the residence is a safe and enjoyable one!

Who are the chaperones? 

Our chaperones are members of our organization – either graduated dance students or Company dancers. All chaperones know the organization well and have participated as dancers in our programs. Many of our chaperones repeat the position year after year. You will be re-introduced to them closer to the start of your stay.

How will dancers be supervised in residence?

Ballet Jörgen chaperones will be living at the residence with the residents during their summer dance program. They will have a room in the same suite/floor as the residents. The chaperones will travel to and from George Brown College/Victoria University with the residents on a daily basis. In the evenings, chaperones will be available to escort residents on trips and/or to stay back at the residence. Residents will be permitted to sign out and in and travel in groups of two or more for short walks(10-30min) to the local stores and coffee shops - only before dark. On weekends, the chaperones will take residents for excursions. Residents will be provided with choices for their weekend excursions and will, as a group, decide on their weekend plans. Chaperones will have all the emergency contact information for each resident and in cases where students have cell phones the chaperone will exchange phone numbers with the students. Signing In and Out
All students will have to sign in and out of a provided binder at the residence if they are going out with family or friends, on an outing such as shopping or the movies. If a family member or friend is coming to pick up a student for a visit or outing we require that notice be given by the parents in advance via a email to our office or by talking to Clea Iveson or the Education Coordinator on the phone:

Travel to and from George Brown College
Chaperones will escort residents to the studios and back. They will leave from Museum Station and travel to Dupont Station (3 stops). There is a short 5-minute walk to studios from Dupont Station. Reverse on the way back. TTC fares apply.

What is the residence like?

Each suite unit houses 3 to 7 students in both single and double rooms, and includes 1-2 washrooms, a shared kitchen (equipped with a stove, a fridge, and microwave), and a living room with a TV. Most units also include a small storage area. You will have a swipe key for the building and for your unit and then a traditional metal key for your room. Do not lose your metal key – replacement costs are very high – the university replaces the whole lock at your expense.

What it means to stay in residence?

The basic weekly residence provides: a room with a bed in a suite with a kitchen, bathrooms, and common room. AND included is a daily hot dining room breakfast.

The weekly fee for each option is listed above. The fee reflected there is ONLY for residence; program tuition fees are separate.

There are 4 structured options that include this:
1) adult (18+), no chaperone and you make/purchase your own dinner^ & lunches*
2) student of Sum IV / JC,  you are chaperoned, but make/purchase your own dinner^ & lunches*
3) student of Sum III/ IV/ JC, you are chaperoned & have daily dinner in the dining hall, no lunches incl*
4) Student of Sum II, you are chaperoned and have daily dinner in the dining hall, no lunches incl*

There is a fee per meal for each lunch or dinner  - posted on the website.

Travel to and from George Brown/Ballet Jörgen studios for classes 
From the residence it is a very short walk to Museum Station and then subway travel to Dupont Station (3 stops). There is a short 5-minute walk to the studios from Dupont Station. Reverse on the way back. TTC (Toronto Transit Commission)fares apply. This trip takes up to 25 minutes total and this is the trip that chaperones use wen escorting dancers aged 17 and under. 

If you walk the whole distance – it takes about 35-40 minutes. 

For the Subway travel residents are expected to purchase their own fares.  

The TTC uses a PRESTO card for fares or you can tap with a credit or debit card. A PRESTO card can be purchased for about $5.00 and loaded at the subway station or at a Shoppers Drug Mart and then loaded with funds. Students can then just tap into the system when travelling to and from the residence. Alternatively, you can tap on and off with a debit/credit card. The Presto card is useful if you are in residence for a full month because then you can purchase a monthly pass and this gives you unlimited rides. Otherwise, you pay the ride fee every time and it lasts for 2 hours of on and offs. All can be sorted with the chaperones on check-in day. You may also pre-purchase and pre-load your PRESTO card online before arriving in Toronto. 

Orientation & Check-in

Check-in will take place at the Margaret Addison Hall, located at 140 Charles Street West, Toronto ON, M5S 1K9. Margaret Addison Hall is just across the street from Rowell Jackman Hall, where the dancers will be staying. Check-in will begin at 4:00pm on your check-in day. Check-in is the day before your summer dance program classes start.

Check-in time is any time after 4:00pm on check-in day and check out time is prior to 11:00am on the day of your departure.

We will have an orientation meeting on the check-in day – usually in the evening. Parents are welcome to stay, but this can also be a good time for parents to depart; leaving the residents all together with their chaperones. The chaperones will go over rules and guidelines as well as establish in detail the timing and travel plan for the next morning.

Rooms
Upon check-in at the residence, you will be assigned a room and receive a key. Rooms will be either suite style or traditional dormitory style – room type is subject to availability. Please note that if a student locks themselves out of their room or suite, then the chaperone will have to accompany them to the main desk to get a temporary key, which must be returned to the main desk. Lost keys will demand that a fine be paid.

All rooms will have linens and towels provided. Rooms are cleaned on a weekly basis. Each resident will have their own room unless demand requires us to double-up. Your spot in the residence is secured on a first come first serve basis.

What do I need to bring to residence?

Additional items to bring on your trip if you have them:

Laundry

Laundry is available on site, A laundry card can be obtained from the Residence Services Front Desk; guests can load money onto the card (minimum of $5). Refunds are not issued on laundry cards. All laundry cards must be returned upon check-out. You will need to bring your own laundry and dryer supplies.

Meals

Breakfast:  Breakfast will be dine-in only. There is a hot dining room breakfast daily from 7am-9am – this is included in every resident’s weekly fee and is a dine-in only option. In the rare case the dining hall is not open, an alternate cafe breakfast is provided. Your residence room card gives you access to the Burwash Dining Hall for your meals. The dining hall is adjacent to Rowell Jackman Hall where your suite is located.

Lunches have options:
1) Ordering a packed lunch from the residence. This typically is a sandwich, fruit, dessert & drink. These meals are pre-ordered 3 weeks ahead of time, have a per meal fee and picked-up daily at breakfast.

2) George Brown has food options on campus and dancers can buy lunch food there. Where to Eat on Campus | George Brown Polytechnic Or there are a few nearby outdoor options to go to like Tim Hortons, Pizza Nova & Rice & Roti place.

3) Dancers can make their own lunches and bring them. Every suite has a full kitchen with a fridge and there are nearby grocery stores for getting supplies.

Dinner depends on what program you are in:

1) Sum IV & Junior Company dancers can make their own dinner meals in the suite kitchen with their own provisions.

2) Sum IV & Junior Company dancers can sign-up for hot buffet style dinners served in the Burwash dining hall at the residence between 5pm-7pm. This comes in a 5 dinners/week or 7 dinners/week option and is ordered 4-5 weeks ahead of your stay. There are fees.

3) Sum II & III dancers have the hot buffet-style dinner served in the residence Burwash dining hall from 5pm-7pm, included in their weekly fees. (If a Sum III dancer prefers to dinner flexibility, they can use the above option)

Dietary specifications: 

The following are some of the dietary considerations the university has provided: Vegetarian, intolerances such as gluten, lactose, & halal food and more. For specific food allergies, the kitchen is alerted and our chaperone will ask for access to medication and instructions on how to properly administer the prescription, in case of emergency. If the resident has a dietary restriction, indicate the restriction on the application form and how best to accommodate it.

VICTORIA COLLEGE RESIDENCE
-RULES AND GUIDELINES 

1. QUIET TIME begins at 9:30PM – please do not make any excessive noise after this time and please do not disturb your chaperones unless it is an emergency

2. You need to get adequate sleep and eat properly in order to be successful in the program or you risk getting sick or injured.

3. The group will depart residence together by 8:40AM, the group will return to the residence at the end of the day.

4. It is NOT the chaperones responsibility to wake you up in the morning, set your alarm, ask other dancers to wake you

5. Make sure that you are prepared for class and have everything with you that you will need for the day. Don’t forget a water bottle! If you forget something at the residence, it will be difficult for you to go back mid-day to retrieve it

6. If you are sick, you will need to STAY at the residence and you MUST be in contact with your chaperone throughout the day. The chaperone will escort the other students to class and then return to the residence if an ill resident has stayed behind

7. Warm-up begins at 9:10AM – MANDATORY, YOU WILL NEED TO BE DRESSED AND READY

8. If you are leaving the residence for any reason, you MUST sign out in the binder and make sure your chaperone knows. You must ALWAYS go out in groups of 2 or more. After dark, you must be in the company of a chaperone

9. If you are leaving for an extended period of time (afternoon, evening, over-night), please provide the name of the person you are with (over the age of 18), their relationship to you and contact information where you can be reached
*If you are under the age of 18, we require written or verbal permission from your parent or guardian before you will be allowed to leave*

10. The common areas in each suite are exactly that, a common area – so please be respectful of others and clean up after yourself

11. Stay in touch with your parents, they care about you and want to know what you are doing

12. If you are feeling lonely or homesick, come talk to one of the Ballet Jörgen Staff – we are all here to ensure that your experience in the program is a positive and memorable one

MAKE SURE YOU DON’T LOCK YOUR KEY IN YOUR ROOM.

How to get to the Residence from Pearson International Airport

192 Airport Rocket: All day Airport service from Kipling Station. The 192 Airport Rocket route provides all-day accessible bus service between Kipling Station on the Bloor-Danforth Subway and Pearson International Airport.

Service operates from approximately 5:30am to 2:00am, seven days a week. Please visit www.ttc.ca for current schedules and fares.

One-way travel time is approximately 20 to 25 minutes (from airport to Kipling Station, it will be an additional 30 – 40 minutes on the subway to get to the residence. To reach the residence from the airport take the 192 Airport Rocket to Kipling subway station, board any train at Kipling station (they only go eastbound), exit at Bay Station and the residence is a 5-minute walk from the station.

The Union Pearson Express takes about 25 minutes to reach downtown Toronto with only 2 brief stops along the way. The Union Pearson Express connects directly to Terminal 1 at Toronto Pearson and runs every 15 minutes. For more information visit http://www.upexpress.com/

By Taxi
The City of Toronto licenses the taxis that service Toronto Pearson International Airport to ensure safety standards and fare consistency. Rates are predetermined based on the time and distance to your destination within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Taxis are available outside of every terminal and there is typically a taxi stand where you will be directed to a taxi.

How to get to the Residence from the Billy Bishop Airport (Island Airport – Porter Air)

Once you have travelled to the main land (tunnel or short ferry), walk north (away from the lake) one block to the Streetcar stop. Board a streetcar travelling east (along the lake), it will say Union Station on the front. Get off at Union station and board a northbound train on the University-Spadina line (heading North along the University Line). Get off at Museum station. It is about a 3 minute walk from the station to the residence.

Parking at the residence

Please be advised that parking around the residence may be difficult to find. There is limited street parking on Charles Street West. There is an area at Margaret Addison Hall for vehicles to pull in (but not to park). You may drop your dancer off here with their luggage so that they can sign into the residence. From here, you can either depart or find a place to park your vehicle.

Residence is available to students, ages 12 years or older. (Excluding Summer Intensive I Programs). All residents must be fully vaccinated.

The weekly fee for each option is listed above.

JDA Summer Intensive students will be living in the Victoria College residence (85 Charles Street, Toronto, ON). The residence is located on the University of Toronto, St. George campus. Students will live a two-minute walk from Museum TTC station – three subway stops away from George Brown College, Casa Loma campus. Students will live just minutes away from the Gardiner Museum, the Royal Ontario Museum, the Bata Shoe Museum, the Varsity Arena, the Royal Conservatory of Music, Queen’s Park, Yorkville shopping district and many, many stores and restaurants. The rooms are setup suite style – with single rooms and common living spaces (shared bathroom, living room and full kitchen with stove, fridge, etc.) The suites usually accommodate 4 people – with the exception of the large suite, which accommodates 12 people. All rooms include linens, wifi, television, etc. There are some rooms that are double rooms. We normally reserve those rooms for students who prefer to room together. We will never put students in a double room without notification.

Breakfast and dinner will be provided by the residence for students registered in Summer II/III. Students registered in Summer IV or Junior Company have the option to sign up for dinner with an additional fee. Bagged lunches are available for an additional fee. There is also a full-service cafeteria at George Brown College, where students can purchase a lunch on their own. Some available options are: Tim Hortons, Pizza Pizza, Dolce Vita and Subway.

In some cases – yes. The following are some of the dietary considerations the university has made in the past: Vegetarians, lactose intolerance, allergies or food intolerances (e.g. gluten-free options), halal food. In the case that your child has a food allergy, please provide us with the medication and instructions on how to properly administer the prescription, in case of emergency. If your child has a dietary restriction, indicate the restriction on their application form and how best to accommodate it.

JDA provides a chaperone for students, ages 17 and under. Chaperones live in the residence with the summer students. Each chaperone is assigned to supervise 10 students. The students go for breakfast with their chaperones and then depart together to George Brown College via the subway. The chaperones accompany the students all the way to class. The chaperones then meet the students at the end of the day of classes to escort them back to the residence for dinner and evening activities.

No personal mail is to be delivered via the college. Packages will have to come via courier to the loading dock [Purolator, UPS, DHL etc]:

Rooms are accessed by staff daily to empty garbage, replace towels and make beds – BUT this is only done if the room is found tidy – please put your things away in drawers and on shelves.
