101 – Basic Arm Positions

This lesson will teach you the fundamentals of correct arm position, focusing on the four most common positions in ballet: Starting, First, Second, and Above the Head. Port de bras is the French term we use in ballet, and it means ‘carrying the arms.’ Understanding how to use your arms and have the correct ballet upper body posture is essential to becoming a good dancer.

In this lesson you will learn:

  • How the arms are connected through the back muscles
  • What the arm shapes should look like in each position
  • Arm and hand positioning through the four most common ballet positions: Starting, First, Second, and Above the Head.
