121 – Relevé on one leg

Level: Foundation I | Duration: 24 minutes | Equipment required: Barre, chair, or counter for balance.

This lesson concentrates on building strength on one leg with Relevés in Cou-de-pied. A Relevé is the raising of the body onto pointe or demi-pointe. It comes from the French word ‘relever’ which means to raise.

If you can combine proper alignment with the use of the correct muscles to build the strength needed to Relevé well, this foundational movement will set you free. It requires a lot of strength to Relevé on one leg, understanding how to do this correctly will help you in all aspects of your ballet work.

In this lesson you will learn:

  • How to work your muscles properly while maintaining the correct placement in your body on the way up and most importantly on the way down in a Relevé
  • Proper placement of the hips so that they are even when all the weight is over the supporting leg and the head is free
  • How to get as high as possible on the demi-pointe
