133 – Introduction to Stretching for Ballet

Level: All levels | Duration: 34 minutes | Equipment required: Barre, chair, or counter for balance, Yoga mat, Yoga block or cushion, access to a wall.

This lesson introduces stretching for ballet. It focuses on lengthening the muscles that help our bodies become more flexible. Stretching is beneficial to reduce tension and it makes our bodies more supple making it easier to dance.

Make sure your body is already warmed up before attempting this lesson. Stretches like the ones shown in this lesson should be practiced only when your body is warmed up and deepened gradually only when your body is ready. Never push your stretches to the point of pain.

In this lesson you will learn:

  • Introductory stretches that will help your ballet training and prepare your body for more advanced stretches in the future
  • Understanding of how stretching in ballet helps lengthen and improve muscle elasticity to increase flexibility and range of motion in the body
  • Mobility exercises and stretches that you can do at the end of your ballet practices to keep your body in a healthy condition
