135 – Battement lent & Relevé lent

Level: Foundation I | Duration: 32 minutes | Equipment required: Barre, chair, or counter for balance.

This lesson teaches you to correctly execute Battement lent and Relevé lent; practicing slowly raising your fully stretched leg up in the air. Battement lent is a term used in Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) to describe the slow raising of one straight leg into the air starting from Fifth position. In the Vaganova School, they use the term Relevé lent for the raising of a straight leg, but they start the leg from a pointe tendu. Another term, often used for this movement in some schools like the French, is Allongé. This lesson requires the correct use of your turn out, placement and stretched leg.

In this lesson you will learn:

  • How to use the correct muscles and maintain proper placement as you execute this important ballet movement
  • How to slowly raise your leg correctly from both Fifth position and Point Tendu
  • The different terms used by ballet instructors to refer to these movements
