Level: Foundation I | Duration: 23 minutes | Equipment required: Barre, chair, or counter for balance
This lesson introduces a new important element of ballet – spotting – which is the action of the head and eyes while turning that allows us to spin and rotate in space without becoming too dizzy. Spotting is critical to perform pirouettes, double tours, chaînés and other steps that involve spinning our bodies.
In this lesson you will learn:
- How to practice spotting and how to keep your head in the correct place as you spot
- How to maintain focus on one spot in the room while turning
- Understand facings – the four corners and four sides of the dance studio or stage
- How to use the gallop to practice how to change direction as you move through space
