142 – Plié into Retiré relevé, Preparing for the Pirouette

Level: Foundation II | Duration: 33 minutes | Equipment required: Barre, chair, or counter for balance, and a Yoga mat for floor work (optional).

This lesson begins with a focus on with how to go to from Plié to Retiré relevé with the foot to the front. This is a core movement that you’ll use every day in ballet and is a preparation for pirouettes from 5th position.  You’ll learn how to engage your leg and feet properly while maintaining correct placement and coordination throughout the movement, and then you can practice with us!

In this lesson you will learn:

  • the important dynamics of moving from Plié to Relevé, Retiré devant from 5th position
  • how to draw up the leg quickly and correctly into Retiré
  • to keep both sides of the body long while maintaining your square and level hips and shoulders
