Raccourci – A shortcut step

A short quick movement of the leg, from an extended position into a cou de pied. Often used in petit allegro .

Relevé – A raising of the body onto pointe or demi-pointe

From the French word Relever, meaning to raise, relevé is often used to indicate that there is a plié before the push up onto demi or pointe as opposed to Elevé or Rise, which are used to indicate that a dancer is rising from straight legs. Alternatively, in some techniques, it is used for both raises from straight legs, and from demi pliés.

Retiré – A position with the toes by or above the knee

A position in which the thigh is raised to the side, with the knee bent so that the pointed toe is held in front of, behind, or to the side of the supporting knee. Also called Raccourci.

Rond de Jambe en l’air – The making a circular movement in the air

Executed with one leg making a circular motion in the air.

 

Rond de Jambe à Terre – The leg making a circular movement on the ground

Executed with one leg making a circular motion on the ground.

Royale – A change of legs from front to back with a beat except in the French School where this same step is named Entrechat Trois

From the word Royal, originally describing a jump with the calves beating together, but has evolved to also include the use of a beat through the whole leg. Sometimes it is also called changement battu. In the French School this jump is called Entrechat Trois.

Révérence – A curtsey or bow

A bow of the dancer at the end of a class or performance.
